With another budget deficit in Maryland, Republicans see an opportunity
Annapolis, Md.:
As the 2026 legislative session begins, Maryland lawmakers are once again confronting a significant budget shortfall, with a projected $1.5 billion deficit and even larger gaps ahead in future years.
Senate Minority Leader Steve Hershey says the challenge facing the General Assembly is not just closing this year’s gap, but confronting the underlying causes that continue to drive state spending higher — and make life less affordable for Maryland families.
“We are going to take a good look at the type of legislation that comes in from the majority party, because we know what’s important to Marylanders,” said Hershey. “That’s affordability, energy, and accountability of government.”
In an interview with Maryland Matters, Hershey warned that last year’s combination of cuts, tax increases, and temporary fixes failed to deliver a lasting solution — and pushed difficult decisions into the future.
Hershey has been clear that while Republicans remain in the minority, they will continue pressing for responsible budgeting, restraint in government growth, and policies that respect taxpayers.
As debates unfold this session — from energy costs to unfunded mandates — Hershey says the focus must remain on the everyday pressures Marylanders feel and the long-term stability of the state.
“Government has out-sized itself,” Hershey said. “We’ve gotten to the point where there’s more government than people need.”
Hershey emphasized that addressing Maryland’s fiscal challenges will require more than short-term patches. It will require discipline, honesty, and a willingness to prioritize what truly matters.Read the full article on Maryland Matters:
