Real Utility Relief for Maryland Families
Maryland families continue to face rising electricity costs and it remains one of the most common concerns I hear from constituents across our district.
During today’s debate on the Senate floor, I spoke about the need to move beyond short-term fixes and focus on meaningful, lasting solutions that address the root causes of high energy prices in our state.
Watch my Remarks
While Maryland leads the nation in energy assistance spending, that alone cannot be the measure of success. We must ask whether our policies are actually lowering costs for families or simply helping them cope with increases.
Recent proposals highlighted by the Governor Moore suggest savings of approximately $150 per year for the average household. That equates to about $12 per month. For a typical family using around 1,500 kilowatt-hours of electricity each month, those savings are modest and unlikely to provide meaningful relief.
Marylanders deserve a more serious and comprehensive approach.
That means focusing on:
Short-term relief for families currently struggling with high bills
Mid-term strategies that bring stability and predictability to energy costs
Long-term reforms that address the structural factors driving prices higher in Maryland
Our goal should be clear: reliable, affordable energy that supports both our households and our economy.
I remain committed to advancing practical, responsible policies that deliver real results, not just incremental changes, for the people of Maryland.
