Preserving Maryland’s Racing Legacy While Protecting Taxpayer Investments

Maryland’s horse racing industry is more than a sporting tradition — it is part of our state’s history, economy, and identity. From generations of Maryland-bred champions to the global spotlight of the Preakness Stakes, racing has long supported jobs, agriculture, tourism, and local communities across our state.

That is why members of the Maryland General Assembly recently sent a letter to the Maryland Stadium Authority requesting additional analysis and options regarding the potential acquisition and redevelopment of Laurel Park.

Our goal is straightforward: ensure that Maryland taxpayers are making smart, transparent, and responsible investments while preserving the long-term future of racing in Maryland.

I joined FOX45 to discuss the future of the Preakness, the redevelopment of Pimlico, and why lawmakers are asking important questions about long-term planning and taxpayer responsibility.

As redevelopment efforts continue at Pimlico Race Course, lawmakers have raised important questions about the broader strategy for sustaining racing operations across Maryland. The General Assembly’s request seeks clarity on how responsibilities would be divided between the Maryland Stadium Authority (MSA) and the Maryland Economic Development Corporation (MEDCO), including projected capital costs, operational planning, infrastructure improvements, and long-term financial obligations.

This effort is not about slowing progress. It is about ensuring that decisions of this magnitude are guided by facts, accountability, and a sustainable long-term vision.

Maryland has already committed significant public resources toward redevelopment efforts tied to the racing industry. Taxpayers deserve confidence that these investments are being made wisely and strategically. Before moving forward with additional acquisitions or major capital commitments, lawmakers want a complete understanding of the proposal’s financial structure, long-term viability, and overall economic impact.

At the same time, we recognize the importance of protecting one of Maryland’s most iconic sporting events.

The Preakness Stakes belongs in Maryland. It remains a vital part of Baltimore’s identity and an internationally recognized event that generates economic activity, tourism, and statewide pride. Securing its long-term success will require thoughtful planning, modern infrastructure, and a coordinated approach that respects tradition while maintaining fiscal responsibility.

Maryland’s racing industry also supports thousands of workers and businesses connected to breeding, farming, hospitality, tourism, and equine care. Any path forward must consider the broader network of communities and industries that rely on a healthy and sustainable racing economy.

The questions being asked today are both reasonable and necessary. Transparency and due diligence are not obstacles to progress. They are essential components of responsible governance.

As lawmakers continue reviewing proposals and redevelopment plans, the focus remains on preserving Maryland’s racing heritage, protecting taxpayers, and ensuring future investments strengthen the industry for decades to come.

Maryland’s racing tradition is worth preserving. It must be preserved responsibly, with accountability, transparency, and a clear vision for the future.
