Sen. Hershey, Senate Republicans Meet with Sheriffs, Defend 287G Program

Annapolis, Md.:

This morning, Senate Minority Leader Steve Hershey and members of the Senate Republican Caucus met with sheriffs from across Maryland in a Senate office meeting room to hear directly from local law enforcement about the implementation of the federal 287G program.

The discussion focused on how the program operates in practice and why sheriffs believe it remains an important public safety tool. The meeting came as lawmakers prepare for a high-profile hearing later this week on legislation that would eliminate Maryland’s participation in the 287G program.

Listening to Law Enforcement on Public Safety

During the meeting, sheriffs shared firsthand experiences from their jurisdictions, explaining how cooperation between federal and local law enforcement helps remove dangerous criminal offenders from communities.

Senate Republicans emphasized that policy decisions related to public safety should be informed by those charged with enforcing the law. The conversation underscored the importance of listening to law enforcement professionals who work directly with the program and understand its impact at the local level.

What the 287G Program Does—and What’s at Stake

The 287G program allows trained local law enforcement officers to partner with federal authorities to identify and detain serious criminal offenders who are in the country illegally. Participation is voluntary and targeted, focusing on individuals who pose a threat to public safety.

Republican lawmakers expressed concern that eliminating the program would remove a critical tool from local sheriffs—despite their objections—and limit cooperation that helps keep Maryland communities safe.

Senate Republicans Address Media Following Caucus Meeting

Following the caucus meeting, Senator Hershey and Senate Republicans held a media availability at the podium to address the proposed legislation and respond to claims surrounding the 287G program.

They stressed the need to set the record straight and highlighted the concerns raised by sheriffs who traveled to Annapolis to share their perspectives. Senate Republicans reiterated their support for law enforcement and their opposition to policies they say would weaken public safety across the state.

Standing with Sheriffs, Standing for Maryland Communities

Senator Hershey thanked the sheriffs for taking the time to meet with lawmakers and for providing valuable insight into how the program functions on the ground.

As the General Assembly considers legislation affecting the 287G program, Senate Republicans say they will continue advocating for policies that prioritize public safety, respect local law enforcement expertise, and ensure that the voices of Maryland’s sheriffs are heard.
