Sen. Hershey Advocates for Affordability and Fiscal Responsibility as 2026 Session Convenes
Annapolis, MD.:
As the Maryland General Assembly returned to Annapolis today for the start of the 90-day legislative session, Senate Minority Leader Steve Hershey sat down with WMAR-2 News to outline the Republican caucus's priorities. With a looming $1.5 billion budget deficit, Senator Hershey is calling for a focus on government accountability rather than further burdens on Maryland taxpayers.
Watch the full WMAR-2 News report below to see Senator Hershey discuss the GOP agenda for affordability, energy costs, and the push for fairer representation.
During the interview, Senator Hershey expressed skepticism regarding promises that no new taxes or fees would be introduced this year. Pointing to the previous session, he noted that despite early assurances, the administration implemented significant new costs, including taxes on the IT industry and increased vehicle registration fees.
"Last year [Governor Moore] said there was a high bar for raising taxes and he hurdled right over that... so we're very concerned about what he plans to do," Hershey told WMAR.
Key Priorities for the 2026 Session:
Affordability: Senator Hershey emphasized that the primary concern for Marylanders is the rising cost of goods, services, and the growing price tag of state government.
Energy Costs: As Marylanders face fluctuating utility bills, the Senator is pushing for solutions that prioritize long-term energy independence and cost reduction.
Government Accountability: With a $1.5 billion deficit, Hershey argues that the state must learn to live within its means and be transparent about how current revenue is being utilized.
Fair Representation: On the topic of mid-cycle redistricting, Senator Hershey reaffirmed that Marylanders want fair maps and stability, rather than partisan maneuvers in the middle of a cycle.
As the session begins its "90-day sprint," Senator Hershey remains committed to standing up for working families and ensuring that the voice of the minority party is heard in the debate over Maryland’s fiscal future.
